In short, this is a Victorian 9ct rolled gold graduated chain, complete with 9ct gold lobster clasps, T bar and swivel fob. The links on the chain are not hollow, giving this piece a really luxurious weight. They graduate gently down in size toward the clasps. 

If you are unfamiliar with rolled gold, it was made by bonding a thick layer of gold with another base metal. It is essentially a much stronger and durable version of the modern gold plating we see today. It means you get the look of solid gold but is a fraction of the price, as you can see here it has that lovely darker shade which you just can’t buy in new jewellery. Both the T bar, lobster clasps and fob are all crafted from solid 9ct gold. 

The fob is set with red wine coloured carnelian and dark green agate, which are two types of opaque quartz, the colours look gorgeous together as the fob swivels.

Condition

Very good condition. This piece looks fabulous considering the age, the gold has aged evenly and beautifully. There is a small amount of patina to certain areas of the chain, where the links are bonded, which is not hugely noticeable when worn. The quartz on the fob are both in excellent condition with no major wear, and the swivel mechanism still operates well.
